Phil Marshall
Phil is our accidental presenter. He blundered into radio in 1980 via a series of coincidences starting with being invited to his local Hospital Radio station by a friend who was a volunteer, only for the "friend" to advise him to forget any hope of broadcasting as there was a waiting list and anyway you don't have the voice for it. If only the "friend" had known Phil had NO ambition to broadcast!

After several years keeping well AWAY from anything (and everything) with a microphone attached, Phil eventually took the broadcast plunge when it was pointed out self-operation studios had long since taken over and there was no longer a need for so-called "engineers". No more trying to look busy with those otherwise invisible little backroom tasks!

Since then, duly bitten by the bug that is broadcasting, Phil has - in addition to too many years in Hospital Radio - been involved in various "restricted service" broadcasts and latterly Community Radio with regular weekend and occasional drivetime slots. None of which means he's any good at it, just ... persistant, available and cheap, VERY cheap!

Musically you'll struggle to find a pigeon hole that fits, he is equally at home playing so-called "Gold" hits, something more contemporary or even a bit more "rocky" (yes, even album tracks by Survivor!).

Ever a self-conscious individual, Phil is not one for being seen running a disco or fronting the village fete PA. He is much more at home sitting - as he says - in a cupboard playing music and talking to myself for a few hours. If somebody else happens to be listening, that is the bonus which makes it all worthwhile!

Oh, and what became of the friend all those years ago? ... never did get beyond fronting the Youth Club disco!
